Helping Children with Loss

A Program for Adults to Help Children Deal with Death, Divorce, Pet Loss, Moving & Other Losses
Most parents want to do whatever they can to protect their children from painful moments and events that may touch their lives.
However, in trying to “protect” them, we often do not realize that we are inadvertently passing on to them the same bits of “misinformation” on how to deal with grief that we learned as children.

Stop and think for a moment about what you learned on how to cope with emotionally painful events when you were a child. Chances are that your parents gave you a list of logical sounding reasons why you should not feel sad. Did any of those reasons honestly make you feel any better? Probably not!

The problem is that grief is emotional, not logical.

Grief is about a broken heart, not a broken brain.

The Struggle Is Real

More likely than not, you simply learned to hide your painful feelings deep inside, rather than express them, because no matter what anyone said, you never really felt any better. This is not because your parents or elders were trying to pass on misinformation to you. They were simply passing on to you the same things they were told as children. Up until now, there really was no useful information that parents could learn on how to effectively help their children successfully deal with the pain of a broken heart.

We Can Help

The creation of the Helping Children with Loss Program has changed that. Now you can learn tools that will not only help your children today, but for the rest of their lives as well. You will be able to teach your children the proper tools to cope with whatever grief may impact their lives; and then later, your children will be able to pass on these tools to their own children as well.

Your participation in this program can make a real difference for generations to come!

The Helping Children with Loss Program is not only designed to help parents, but teachers, school counselors, and anyone else who has contact with children.

These skills can be of enormous value no matter what loss a child has experienced, including, but not limited to the loss of a parent, grandparent, sibling, a divorce in the family, or even the loss of a pet.

Guidelines for Helping Children

To watch a child grieve and not know what to do is a profoundly difficult experience for parents, teachers, and caregivers. Yet, there are guidelines for helping children develop a lifelong healthy response to loss.

Our Program

In this program, participants will learn how to free children from the false idea of “not feeling bad” and to empower them with positive, effective methods of dealing with loss.

To watch a child grieve and not know what to do is a profoundly difficult experience for parents, teachers, and caregivers.

Together We Can Make a Difference

No matter the reason or degree of severity, if a child you love is grieving, the guidelines examined in this program can make a difference.

A Child’s Life Experiences

There are many life experiences that can produce feelings of grief in a child, from the death of a relative or a divorce in the family to more everyday experiences such as moving to a new neighborhood or losing a prized possession.

What Makes the Helping Children with Loss Program Different?

Grief is the normal and natural emotional response to loss, but most of the information we’ve learned about dealing with loss is intellectual.

This program IS

An action-based, LIVE online group that involves reading and writing assignments each week.

This program IS NOT

A drop-in group. Our program structure is such that each session builds on the last.

An Investment In You & Your Loved Ones

Your commitment to showing up and doing the work for the duration of the program is of utmost importance to create the change that you want to see in your life and healing journey, and in that of the lives of your children.
Research has shown that having a support system has many positive benefits, such as higher levels of well-being, better coping skills, and a longer and healthier life. Studies have also shown that following a support program can help with improved communication and interpersonal skills, greater self-acceptance and self-esteem, and the ability to change self-defeating behaviors/habits.

Don’t wait any longer.

As parents, or those entrusted with children in our lives, we want to help our children in every way we can, especially when they are experiencing painful events.

The Helping Children with Loss Group Program provides helpful information and proven tools to equip you to effectively help children work through the emotionally painful events that happen in life.

Do you know a child in need of help? Why wait? Without action, there can be no change. Today can be your new beginning, and there is a right path to helping the children in your life properly deal with their grief!

    What is grief?

Grief is the normal and natural reaction to a loss of ANY kind. It is the conflicting feelings caused by the end of or change in a familiar pattern of behavior.

Loss comes in many forms and there are over 40 types of losses. Among them are:

    • Death of a person or pet
    • Divorce
    • Miscarriage
    • Abortion
    • Moving
    • Starting school
    • New job
    • Job layoff
    • Career change/shift
    • Marriage
    • Graduation
    • Adopting children
    • End of addictions
    • Major health changes
    • Retirement
    • Financial changes – positive or negative
    • Holidays
    • Legal problems
    • Empty nest
    • Change or loss of faith

Often these common life experiences are not seen as grieving events. However, we grieve for the loss of ALL relationships that we deem SIGNIFICANT. If the major loss events in your life have not been associated with death, this does not mean that you may not be grieving – it just means that you may have experienced loss in other forms and/or within situations that may not be associated with death.

For more information about grief and loss, please contact us via our online contact form or call us at (310) 954-1996.

    What is Grief Recovery?

Here at From Grieving to Healing, recovery means feeling better. It means claiming your circumstances instead of your circumstances claiming you and your happiness.

Recovery is finding new meaning for living, without the fear of being hurt again. Recovery is being able to enjoy fond memories without having the precipitate painful feelings of regret or remorse. Recovery is acknowledging that it is perfectly alright to feel sad from time to time and to talk about those feelings no matter how those around you react. Recovery is being able to forgive others when they say or do things that you know are based on their lack of knowledge about grief. Recovery is one day realizing that your ability to talk about the loss you’ve experienced is indeed normal and natural. Most importantly, recovery means acquiring the skills that we should have been taught in childhood, which allow us to deal with loss and grief directly.

Obviously, recovering from a significant emotional loss is not an easy task, but we are here to help you. Taking the actions that lead to recovery will require your attention, open-mindedness, willingness, and courage.

    Who is Grief Recovery for?

Grief Recovery is for anyone who suffers from grief no matter what the cause. There are over 40 types of loss experiences including death, divorce, moving, pet loss, change in financial status, and loss of trust, to name a few.

    If you:

    • Have experienced any of these losses
    • Have a broken heart
    • Want to feel better

…then Grief Recovery is for you.

How do I know if I need Grief Recovery?

Although there are no stages or feelings that every single griever experiences, there are some common symptoms of grief. Do you relate to any of these?

    • Do you feel tired?
    • Do you feel emotionally drained?
    • Do you pretend to be happy?
    • Do you isolate?
    • Have your eating or sleeping patterns changed?
    • Do fond memories of your loved one turn painful?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you are probably experiencing unresolved grief.

How soon after a loss should I start a Grief Recovery program?

It is never too soon to address your grief.

Think about the following analogy: If you have a terrible fall and break your wrist, do you just go about your day and wait for the injury to heal on its own, or do you go to the emergency room right away and get your wrist checked? If you’re like most people, you would likely rush to the ER. Aside from being physically painful, a broken wrist can severely interfere with your daily routine and responsibilities, and perhaps even force you to take time off from doing certain things and engaging in particular activities.

Well, grief is an injury too – not a physical injury, but an emotional injury – and grief can also be severely painful and cause a negative interference and hindrance in our lives when not addressed.

Often times, we place a lot of importance in our physical health and end up neglecting our emotional health. Yet, neglecting our grief can have an even greater negative impact in our life and relationships, because unlike a serious physical injury, grief can get buried and hidden deep down inside us. We can go through our daily lives, and months or even years could go by without acknowledging our emotional pain. However, unresolved grief eventually comes to the surface – whether it’s after 10 months, 10 years, or 40 years – our unresolved grief can and will wreak havoc in our lives if it is not addressed timely and properly.

The great news is that we are here to help you! At From Grieving to Healing we strongly advocate for you to address your grief as soon as possible. Similar to a serious physical injury, grief is an injury that requires immediate attention so that you can address your emotional pain and get on the right path to healing.

Why does nothing else I’ve tried work?

Grief is the normal and natural reaction to loss. It’s not a pathological condition or a personality disorder, but society says there is something wrong with you if you aren’t happy all of the time.

Some of the most common things people hear following a loss are not helpful including “we know how you feel” and “it just takes time.” No one can ever know exactly how you feel because no one had the relationship you had.

Time alone does not heal heartache. Many people come to us with broken hearts over deaths that happened over 20 years ago. It’s not time that heals, but what you do in that time.

Our grief support programs are designed to walk you through a journey from grieving to healing with a proven format to help you take clear actions that will lead you to a happier life.

What is a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist?

A Certified Grief Recovery Specialist is a trained professional that focuses on helping grievers recover from the emotional pain resulting from a loss of ANY kind. We are trained to give you the tools you need to effectively navigate and overcome the turmoil that can result from grief and loss, and our programs offer you an opportunity for personal healing.

How are Grief Recovery programs different from psychotherapy?

Most people relate grief to death, but there are over 40 types of losses people can experience in their lifetime. Since grief is normal and natural, we don’t want to confuse it with mental or personality disorders. Psychotherapy focuses on the treatment of mental and personality disorders.

As Certified Grief Recovery Specialists (not psychotherapists), we deal with grief and grief only. Our grief support programs are structured to help individuals, groups, and organizations from ALL walks of life by providing a “toolkit” to help grievers effectively navigate and overcome the emotional turmoil that can result from grief and loss.

Grief is about a broken heart, not a broken brain. Hence, our grief support programs focus on the FEELINGS and EMOTIONS associated with loss, rather than the intellectual processes that often hinder grievers from moving beyond the emotional pain that comes from loss.

Can Grief Recovery programs be done in conjunction with psychotherapy?

Yes! Many of our clients simultaneously participate in psychotherapy. Here at From Grieving to Healing, we believe that our grief support programs can actually serve to enhance your psychotherapy sessions. Our programs are specifically designed to get to the root of the emotional pain resulting from grief and loss, and the work that we do can help facilitate communication and progress in your psychotherapy sessions.

What grief coaching and support services do you offer?

From Grieving to Healing offers grief coaching and support services for individuals, groups, and organizations from all walks of life.

    Some of our services include:

    • Support Groups
    • 1-on-1 Help
    • Weekend Workshops
    • Corporate Support Programs
    • Spanish Support Programs
    • Webinars & Tutorials

Do you offer grief coaching and support services in Spanish?

    Where are your offices located?

Our Certified Grief Recovery Specialists are based out of several locations throughout Los Angeles County. We can go to you or we can make arrangements to have you come to one of our offices or designated locations. If you are only available via phone or online, we can make arrangements for that as well.

How much do you charge for your grief coaching and support services?

Our fees may vary based on what service(s) you require as well as the meeting location and availability of our Certified Grief Recovery Specialists. We offer custom-priced packages for individuals, companies and organizations, and groups of any size.

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept cash and all major credit cards including Visa, MasterCard, and American Express. We also accept company/business checks, but we do NOT accept personal checks.

    Do you accept medical insurance?

At this time, we do NOT accept medical insurance as a form of payment for our services.
