About Us

“The Grief Recovery Method gives you an evidence-based, step-by-step roadmap to reclaim your circumstances instead of allowing your circumstances to claim you and your happiness. Today can be your new beginning!”

Founder, From Grieving to Healing

Meet Our Founder

From Grieving to Healing was founded by Cathleen A. Cueto (a.k.a. Cathy). Cathy’s Grief Recovery journey began after a series of back-to-back losses, including the devastating loss of a dear mentor and father-figure, the painful break-up of a romantic relationship, and the unexpected layoff that resulted when the firm where she had worked for over a decade was suddenly closed.

After struggling with the conflicting feelings and emotions surrounding her losses, Cathy found the tools needed to begin her recovery journey using the Grief Recovery Method and this helped her heal her broken heart. Recognizing the value of this work, she became a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist dedicating her life to helping others overcome the emotional turmoil that comes from loss and grief.

Cathy’s experience spans over 10 years as a corporate professional in the private equity industry where she spearheaded marketing, public relations, and project management operations for various portfolio companies. Before delving into the private equity realm, Cathy worked at her alma-mater, UCLA, in the Honors Program where she was responsible for leading outreach workshops and campaigns for prospective students, and managing teaching schedules, classroom logistics, and application processes for an élite group of Honors Program professors in media, entertainment, government, and political arenas. Prior to her experience at UCLA, Cathy worked at a private recycling brokerage firm, and also spent some time teaching at a private K-12 school in Los Angeles.

Cathy’s background includes a MBA in Financial Decision Systems and Marketing Management from Loyola Marymount University, and a BA in Sociology and Education from UCLA. Cathy has a profound passion for helping and empowering women in the business world, mentoring and coaching students, and supporting minority, underserved communities. Today, Cathy and her team of Certified Grief Recovery Specialists help many individuals, groups, and organizations from all walks of life by providing a wide range of grief coaching and support services.

From Grieving to Healing takes pride in being a part of the Los Angeles community, and we believe in paying it forward. For over 15 years, Cathy has been devoted to helping people in need and has organized and participated in various events and fundraisers for non-profit organizations and homeless food banks. Cathy is a strong advocate for higher education and has spent much of her time mentoring and tutoring high school students in low-income, underserved communities throughout Los Angeles.

  • Our Commitment To You

As Certified Grief Recovery Specialists, we are trained professionals who focus on helping grievers recover from the emotional pain resulting from a loss of ANY kind. We are trained to give you the tools you need to effectively navigate and overcome the turmoil that can result from grief and loss, and our programs offer you an opportunity for personal healing.

Our goal is to walk with you, hand in hand, through the necessary action steps to actually “recover” from your grieving experience. We define recovery as your ability to be able to enjoy your fond memories, without being overwhelmed by those things you wish might have been different, better, or more in the lost or damaged relationship that was causing you emotional pain.

Most people relate grief to death, but there are over 40 types of losses people can experience in their lifetime. Since grief is normal and natural, we don’t want to confuse it with mental or personality disorders. Psychotherapy focuses on the treatment of mental and personality disorders.

As Certified Grief Recovery Specialists (not psychotherapists), we deal with grief and grief only. Our Grief Recovery programs are structured to help individuals, groups, and organizations from ALL walks of life by providing a “toolkit” to help grievers effectively navigate and overcome the emotional pain that comes from grief and loss.

Grief is about a broken heart, not a broken brain. Hence, our Grief Recovery programs focus on the feelings and emotions associated with loss, rather than the logical, intellectual processes that often hinder grievers from moving beyond their emotional pain.

Our Certified Grief Recovery Specialists are reliable, professional, courteous, and are trained to handle many types of situations. Our customer service is unparalleled, and the quality of care and value of services we provide are unmatched.

    What is grief?

Grief is the normal and natural reaction to a loss of ANY kind. It is the conflicting feelings caused by the end of or change in a familiar pattern of behavior.

Loss comes in many forms and there are over 40 types of losses. Among them are:

    • Death of a person or pet
    • Divorce
    • Miscarriage
    • Abortion
    • Moving
    • Starting school
    • New job
    • Job layoff
    • Career change/shift
    • Marriage
    • Graduation
    • Adopting children
    • End of addictions
    • Major health changes
    • Retirement
    • Financial changes – positive or negative
    • Holidays
    • Legal problems
    • Empty nest
    • Change or loss of faith

Often these common life experiences are not seen as grieving events. However, we grieve for the loss of ALL relationships that we deem SIGNIFICANT. If the major loss events in your life have not been associated with death, this does not mean that you may not be grieving – it just means that you may have experienced loss in other forms and/or within situations that may not be associated with death.

For more information about grief and loss, please contact us via our online contact form or call us at (310) 954-1996.

    What is Grief Recovery?

Here at From Grieving to Healing, recovery means feeling better. It means claiming your circumstances instead of your circumstances claiming you and your happiness.

Recovery is finding new meaning for living, without the fear of being hurt again. Recovery is being able to enjoy fond memories without having the precipitate painful feelings of regret or remorse. Recovery is acknowledging that it is perfectly alright to feel sad from time to time and to talk about those feelings no matter how those around you react. Recovery is being able to forgive others when they say or do things that you know are based on their lack of knowledge about grief. Recovery is one day realizing that your ability to talk about the loss you’ve experienced is indeed normal and natural. Most importantly, recovery means acquiring the skills that we should have been taught in childhood, which allow us to deal with loss and grief directly.

Obviously, recovering from a significant emotional loss is not an easy task, but we are here to help you. Taking the actions that lead to recovery will require your attention, open-mindedness, willingness, and courage.

    Who is Grief Recovery for?

Grief Recovery is for anyone who suffers from grief no matter what the cause. There are over 40 types of loss experiences including death, divorce, moving, pet loss, change in financial status, and loss of trust, to name a few.

    If you:

    • Have experienced any of these losses
    • Have a broken heart
    • Want to feel better

…then Grief Recovery is for you.

How do I know if I need Grief Recovery?

Although there are no stages or feelings that every single griever experiences, there are some common symptoms of grief. Do you relate to any of these?

    • Do you feel tired?
    • Do you feel emotionally drained?
    • Do you pretend to be happy?
    • Do you isolate?
    • Have your eating or sleeping patterns changed?
    • Do fond memories of your loved one turn painful?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you are probably experiencing unresolved grief.

How soon after a loss should I start a Grief Recovery program?

It is never too soon to address your grief.

Think about the following analogy: If you have a terrible fall and break your wrist, do you just go about your day and wait for the injury to heal on its own, or do you go to the emergency room right away and get your wrist checked? If you’re like most people, you would likely rush to the ER. Aside from being physically painful, a broken wrist can severely interfere with your daily routine and responsibilities, and perhaps even force you to take time off from doing certain things and engaging in particular activities.

Well, grief is an injury too – not a physical injury, but an emotional injury – and grief can also be severely painful and cause a negative interference and hindrance in our lives when not addressed.

Often times, we place a lot of importance in our physical health and end up neglecting our emotional health. Yet, neglecting our grief can have an even greater negative impact in our life and relationships, because unlike a serious physical injury, grief can get buried and hidden deep down inside us. We can go through our daily lives, and months or even years could go by without acknowledging our emotional pain. However, unresolved grief eventually comes to the surface – whether it’s after 10 months, 10 years, or 40 years – our unresolved grief can and will wreak havoc in our lives if it is not addressed timely and properly.

The great news is that we are here to help you! At From Grieving to Healing we strongly advocate for you to address your grief as soon as possible. Similar to a serious physical injury, grief is an injury that requires immediate attention so that you can address your emotional pain and get on the right path to healing.

Why does nothing else I’ve tried work?

Grief is the normal and natural reaction to loss. It’s not a pathological condition or a personality disorder, but society says there is something wrong with you if you aren’t happy all of the time.

Some of the most common things people hear following a loss are not helpful including “we know how you feel” and “it just takes time.” No one can ever know exactly how you feel because no one had the relationship you had.

Time alone does not heal heartache. Many people come to us with broken hearts over deaths that happened over 20 years ago. It’s not time that heals, but what you do in that time.

Our grief support programs are designed to walk you through a journey from grieving to healing with a proven format to help you take clear actions that will lead you to a happier life.

How are Grief Recovery programs different from psychotherapy?

Most people relate grief to death, but there are over 40 types of losses people can experience in their lifetime. Grief is about a broken heart, not a broken brain. Hence, our grief support programs focus on the FEELINGS and EMOTIONS associated with loss, rather than the intellectual processes that often hinder grievers from moving beyond the emotional pain that comes from loss.

Can Grief Recovery programs be done in conjunction with psychotherapy?

Yes! Many of our clients simultaneously participate in psychotherapy.
